Women hold the power to drive change in poor and patriarchal rural Afghanistan, women aren’t allowed to leave the house alone and are not given the opportunity to learn the skills they need to earn a living, keeping them trapped in poverty. The spirit and determination of Afghan women is remarkable, but so are the obstacles they face. Indeed, Afghanistan remains one of the hardest places in the world to be a woman.
Take Najla, from a small village in Northern Afghanistan. Before coming into contact with Afghanaid, life was desperate for Najla and her six children. Her husband Karim is deaf and suffers from mental health issues which leave him unable to work. They struggled to provide even the basic essentials for their family. Their youngest daughter died because they could not afford to take her to the doctor.
Then, Afghanaid offered women in Najla’s village the opportunity to enroll in a home gardening course and, because she would be trained by women and would be able to work from home, Najla’s husband let her take part. Najla got the skills and tools she needed to cultivate a small vegetable plot and start her own business selling vegetables and home-made chutneys. Now everything has changed: she can now put nutritious food on her family’s plates, buy her children uniforms so they can attend school, and get her husband the medical care he needs.
Afghanaid knows that women who can generate their own income are not only able to lift their families out of poverty - they have the power to break down stereotypes and command respect. Now, Karim truly appreciates Najla and what she provides for their family. He has asked her to forgive him for restricting her in the past.
