Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS), is an organization committed to protecting and developing a sustainable environment. BEDS is a unique organization working exclusively to help save the endangered coastal region and to develop an atmosphere of cooperation and partnership among various stakeholders with different perspectives.
BEDS was created to address integrated environmental and development issues such as climate change, natural disasters, accelerated population growth, human rights, women empowerment, unsustainable use of natural resources, natural resource management, wildlife extinction, biodiversity, food crises, farming, fisheries, education, health, nutrition, and unemployment.
To date, BEDS has implemented numerous projects towards environmental conservation and the socioeconomic development of the people who are living in the Sundarbans, the single larges mangrove forest in the world, and has formed partnerships with Japan Envrionmental Education Forum (JEFF), Korea Green Foundation (KGF), Keidanren Nature Conservation Fund (KNCF), Chelonian Research Foundation (CRF), Turtle Conservation Fund, Winrock International, and Bangladesh Agircultural University. In 2015, BEDS received the Government Environmental Award as recognition of its pragmatic and innovative work, and signed an MOU with the Centre for Integrated Studies on Sundarbans (CISS).
JEEF and BEDS are now implementing the Sundarbans Mangrove Biodiversity Education project with teachers, students, and communities in Bangladesh to share knowledge and create respect for the biodiversity of the Sundarbans. Under the project, BEDS has already developed students booklets for third through fifth graders, such as “Our Sundarbans in Pictures”, “Our Sundarbans in Rhymes”, and “Our Sundarbans in Stories”, as well as educational card games and Sundarbans Tour Guides, Teaching Manuals, and Community Mobilization video documentary. BEDS is currently in the process of piloting these educational materials in 82 primary schools across Bangladesh.
BEDS is also working on a project promoting the use of renewable energy in Bangladesh, along with KGF and SLF. So far in the project, BEDS has distributed 2,800 Solar Lamp home systems among poor families, and have implemented a solar school project. Additionally, they have constructed an 11.25kw solar station in the Sundarbans region and are planning to install more solar stations in the near future. BEDS is also implementing an Eco Village Project to serve as model of a comprehensive program combining green housing, green education, and green business in the Sundarbans region, which is especially environmentally vulnerable.
Give2Asia is currently working with BEDS on an Education Service Project in the Sundarbans, with the objectives of reducing the number of drop-outs through the support of education materials, motivating the parents/guardians to help continue the education of their children and support children’s rights, and to reduce the pressure on the Sundarbans resources in the future.
Acknowledging that poverty is often the main barrier for conservation, BEDS is now implementing a project to reduce poverty through eco-activities that effectively utilizes natural resources, reduces the pressure of over and under-planned extraction of natural resources, and ensures a sustainable ecological balance. Additionally, BEDS has planted approximately 21,000 trees from their tree plantation in 56 school grounds, with the help of teachers, students, and parents.
