The Foundation for Agrarian Reform Cooperatives in Mindanao (FARMCOOP) is a grassroots not-for-profit organization committed to the welfare and socio-economic development of disadvantaged farming communities in Mindanao. Our mission is to build sustainable and resilient farming communities through organic agriculture, value-adding entrepreneurship, and cooperative effort.
Farmcoop was founded in 1995 to address the call of the Philippine government for NGOs to assist in the implementation of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Law (CARP) designed to emancipate farm workers from poverty and uplift their quality of life. Despite the absence of government funding and resistance from multi-national corporations, FARMCOOP has partnered with international funding agencies and local plantations and successfully organized and built the capacities of farmer cooperatives in institutional development, organic and low-input production and farming operational systems, farm-to-market access, credit access, market-linkage, negotiating fair market agreements, and, most importantly, legal acquisition and ownership of their land. More recently, the impacts of climate change and shifting global and local market conditions have imposed intensifying impacts on our rural farming communities. More ecologically sustainable practices, more economically viable farming practices and more diverse markets must be developed. The survival of our communities and the land on which they live depend on it.
Farmcoop is currently serving 6,771 agrarian reform beneficiaries, small farmers, and indigenous peoples farming over 10,429 hectares of land in Mindanao. In addition to supporting all our partner cooperatives, current projects include:
In the Sibulan tribal community where years of armed conflict and poverty render the youth vulnerable to recruitment into insurgency, where malnutrition in children and adults are high and where cultural disintegration and domestic violence are a great concern, our activities also include a pilot project promoting holistic community health and family well-being, youth and women capacity building, and cultural revitalization.
Funding support to Farmcoop will help the organization improve its services and programs to the above communities as well as the long-term development of sustainable agriculture and community resilience in the Philippines.
