The Colours of Courage Trust was founded in 2008 and its mission is to fund projects aimed at promoting cancer research and providing treatment facilities while upgrading the facilities of the National Cancer Institute in terms of machinery, buildings and maintenance.
Trail is one of the Trust’s largest fundraising initiatives. It is a charity walk that carries a message of unity and understanding along the length of Sri Lanka while raising funds in aid of cancer treatment. In the process of recovering from Sri Lanka’s 30-year civil war, 30,000 people from across the island came together in July 2011 over the course of 27 days to walk a 670 km Trail along the length of the country – from Southern Dondra Head to Northern Point Pedro. With support from Sri Lankans at home and abroad, the walk raised over USD 2.6 million with all the proceeds going towards building the nation’s second dedicated cancer hospital – the Tellippalai Trail Cancer Hospital in Jaffna.
Trail began as a serendipitous coming together of idea and purpose between two friends and colleagues – Sarinda Unamboowe who had pledged that if the war were to end, he would walk the length of his homeland as a commitment to peace, and Nathan Sivagananthan who was touched by a personal loss to cancer and felt this walk was the most impactful way to help the many others struggling with the disease.
They are supported in the execution of this vision by the Colours of Courage Trust on whose board they both sit, and a dedicated team comprised of primarily tireless volunteers helping achieve this worthy goal.
With the success of Trail 2011 and the establishment of a 120 bed state-of-the-art cancer treatment facility, we are now revving up for Trail 2016 this October. We will walk from Northern Point Pedro to Southern Dondra Head with the aim of raising USD 5 million to expand the cancer treatment facility at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle. In 2015, the hospital recorded its highest number of cancer related deaths and national incidence is on the rise. It is in dire need of an expansion as it is currently unable to meet patient requirements. We cannot fight this battle alone – we need your help. With your support, we will be able to change the lives of those fighting to beat this disease.
