Who we are
SOS Children’s Villages of India, a non-profit and global child care organisation, has been a pioneer in India with over 53 years of committed experience in caring for once parentless and disadvantaged children and vulnerable families. With the inauguration of the first SOS Children's Village at Greenfields, Faridabad by Late Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the organisation has grown from strength to strength and spread all across India with rapid expansion of its programs for children.
Today it impacts the lives of over 25,000 children & their families, through 32 SOS Children’s Villages, allied & community based projects like Family Strengthening Programmes, Kindergartens, Schools, Vocational Training Centers, and a Nursing School, spread in 22 states of India. Since its inception, it has settled over four generations of once parentless or abandoned children of the country and provided those with loving homes and enduring family ties. These children have an identity, a family to call their own and most importantly, grow up to become active and contributing members of society.
Why we started
Imagine a child alone, abandoned or parentless with no- one to call their own, no place to live or food to eat. Scary, isn't it? Too many children in the world are alone as they lose their parents or are abandoned by one or both parents. Often some are rejected by their communities. If a child’s needs and rights are not being fulfilled it means they are alone. This is not just about small children. Being alone is tough for young people too; those who are preparing themselves for adulthood and a life independent of parental care. It’s a journey they shouldn’t have to take alone. Every child and young person needs a caring family environment and a supportive community to look out for their best interests and help them develop to their full potential.
There are over 20 million children in India who have no one to call their own.
Where we work
For over 53 years, SOS Children’s Villages of India has been working hard to ensure that No Child Grows Up Alone and that their lives are transformed with its customised long term care. With such committed care and service provided to children, it is one of the largest self-implementing NGOs with pan India presence across 32 projects in 22 states. It provides direct care to over 25,000 children annually. It has already settled four generations of children in India.
Further, SOS India has always responded promptly to the call of children in distress or rendered homeless or orphaned in natural and man-made disasters because of its presence all over the country and available infrastructure. It has actively worked on relief and rehabilitation efforts during natural disasters over the years including the Bhopal gas tragedy, the Latur and Bhuj earthquakes, cyclones in Odisha and Vishakhapatnam.
