BRAC is an international development organization and global leader in developing cost-effective, evidence-based poverty innovations in extremely poor, conflict-prone, and post-disaster settings. Referred to by Nicholas Kristof as “the best aid group you’ve never heard of,” BRAC envisions a world free of all forms of exploitation and discrimination where everyone has the opportunity to realize their potential.
Myanmar Flood Response
Devastating monsoons have displaced more than 70,000 people in Myanmar and we urgently need your help to provide them with life-saving supplies. BRAC started its response on August 1st, providing medicine, clean water, food, cooking materials, and latrines in six relief camps. We need your support now to scale up these services and reach 20,000 people who desperately need help.
In mid-July heavy monsoon rains forced thousands of people in Myanmar to leave their homes. According to the Department for Disaster Management (DDM), Bago is one of the most affected areas with more than 71,000 people displaced (over 15,000 households). People are taking shelter in 157 evacuation sites including monasteries and schools where the government and organizations like BRAC are providing relief services.
BRAC was one of the first organizations to respond to the crisis. Your donation will go directly to providing life-saving services to families in need. Our staff are on the ground providing food, water, installing toilets, and healthcare to thousands of people in need.
With a long-term presence in Myanmar, BRAC will provide immediate emergency relief as well as long-term support to help families rebuild their lives after the flooding dissipates.
To achieve this vision, BRAC creates opportunities for people in situations of poverty, illiteracy, disease, and social injustice by running programs in financial inclusion, education, healthcare, legal rights, girls’ empowerment, agriculture, and more; socially responsible businesses; a bank; a university; and one of the world’s largest mobile money platforms, bKash.
Founded in Bangladesh in 1972, BRAC is the only international development organization of its scale born in the global south. Today, BRAC is active in 11 countries around the world, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, and the Philippines. It touches the lives of more than 110 million people around the world each year.
In 2018, BRAC was ranked the number one non-governmental organization (NGO) in the world for the third year running by NGO Advisor, an independent media organization based in Geneva. BRAC’s annual global expenditure exceeds $1 billion, and in Bangladesh, more than 75% of its budget is funded by its own socially responsible businesses. However, many of its most crucial social programs still depend on the support of donors like you.
Based in New York, BRAC USA is the US affiliate of BRAC, formed in 2006 to advance and support BRAC’s global mission to create opportunities for people to realize their potential. BRAC USA provides comprehensive support to BRAC around the world by raising awareness about its work and mobilizing resources to underpin its programs.
