A Strategic Plan
In this part of the country, the major victims of losing their identity are Dalits (SC) and Tribes (ST); we have a huge population of these communities in our targeted villages. Our strategies are different to retain their identity.
We identify vulnerable families who are susceptible to lose their identity through our door to door survey/interaction. We try and understand the reasons why are they inclining to lose their identity. Majority of these vulnerable families lose their identity as they are provided / promised with some kind of financial support especially during crisis/ marriages/ health problems/etc. Lack of earning sources at their family level is also one of the major reasons. We help them with some critical inputs to stop such decision before implementation.
Strategies: Standing crops, with all efforts and investment of a farmer, fail due to lack of a critical irrigation in the peak hours; career of a child spoils in absence of such critical support, health / hygiene deteriorates without such critical inputs and livelihood of a family could be improved with such critical intervention. Janakalyan has initiated an intervention in North Karnataka to provide critical support to the needy families to improve their health, hygiene, education and livelihood status so that they can never even think about losing their ancestral identity. The various situations, which lead the vulnerable families to lean towards identity crisis by way of making false promises by their representatives are briefed below. These are some of the situation which compels these families to take an adverse decision.
Reaching the Unreached
Donation Option-1: Present an Education Kit to a poor child / youth of north Karnataka:
There are many children in villages who could not puchase the required school stationaries due to poverty at home. The uniform, text books and mid-day meal is available in the government schools but who should provide them with the necessary note books, pen, pencils, geometry box, water bottle, bag and such other necessities? There are many children who drop out of the education system when teachers pressurises for these stationaries. Janakalyan identifies such deserving children and provide them with an Education kit containing all these items.

Donation Option-2: Help build a career of a child/youth from a vulnerable family:
The only source of income is a small piece of land for many a families of vulnerable rural communities. Per capita land availability has reduced while the yield per acre has gone down to any extent. Many families live in hand to mouth situation. The children are generally sent to schools and after matriculation engage them in driving/ construction works while the girls are married at the age of 14-15 years. Lack of transportation, lack of hostel facility, security to the girls, etc. are some of the reasons for dropping out while the important being poverty. Janakalyan identifies such children/youth from vulnerable communities and help them with Rs.2000 stipend to pursue their college education at least till they become 18 years old. Most of the parents also become susceptible to conversion while they can’t meet the marriage expenditure of their daughters. While the parents get at least 2 years of time to think while the girls complete their 12th standard. Sometime, one needs to meet the marriage expenditures too to stop child marriage.
Rural Skill Improvement
Donation Option-3: Provide an agricultural or artisan tool kit and improve livelihood security of a valnerable family:
Instead of providing fish, teach how to fish is the idea behind this intervention. We identify the vulnerable families, who need a critical support in terms of sewing machine, agricultural equipments, blacksmith kit, carpenter kit, washer-man kit, or such other traditional artisan kits so that they start earning from very next day. With this, we can help the families to earn some income so that they do not lean towards the false promises and thus ensure their livelihoods.

Donation Option-4: Help prevent child marriage/ labor through post-metric education of vulnerable families:
Most of the girls and many boys drop their education after completion of matriculation from village schools due to various factors and become victims of child marriage/labor. The deadly consequences of child marriage are infant mortality, maternal mortality, underweight birth, malnourished child, family problems, suicide, divorce, etc. To address this, Janakalyan, initiated an intervention to support these victims with monthly donation support to continue their post metric education so that they also do not become victims of child marriage / child labor.
Donation Option-5: Create Water Banks to ensure profitable farming of vulnerable families:
All the farmers of North Karnataka are having small land holding especially the vulnerable communities. ‘Irrigation’ is one of the most critical inputs to enhance productivity and thereby ensuring food security; India has built many irrigation dams across rivers to provide irrigation facilities to peasant communities. Command areas of all such irrigation project have an upper reach, middle part and tail end. The tail end farmers experience 2-extremes of water availability. During rainy season, upper reach farmers do not require irrigation and thus leave excess water through canals, which inundates standing crops of tail-end (smallholder) farmers. While in peak season, upper reach farmers don’t leave any water until they satisfy their irrigation needs causing drying up of standing crops in tail end. In both extremities, losers are the tail end farmers. Over the years, based on their experience, farmer now cultivate only part of their landholding (out of < 2ha) keeping the water availability during peak season in mind and leave remaining land fallow. The land use intensity and productivity decreased drastically pushing farmers to food insecurity and hunger. Therefore, they become susceptible to many crisis including conversion.
Janakalyan has evolved an innovative intervention to tackle 2-extremities as well as making the fallow land useful to ensure 10-securities to small holders. Janakalyan motivates the smallholder farmers to excavate a ‘Water Banks’ in fallow part of the land; harvest excess water during rainy season and use it for life saving irrigation (water security-1) during peak season. Thus, 2-extremities of water availability addressed. Cultivate fish (food security-1), plant biomass generating and fruit bearing trees on the bunds of the structure to improve soil fertility (fertility security-2) and ensure fuel-wood (firewood security-3). Grow fodder (fodder security-4) in part of the land to manage 1-2 milch animals for health management as well as regular income (financial security-5); also use the cow excreta for plant protection and soil health improvement (input security-6). Diversify cropping pattern to distribute risk of crop failure – loss by failure of one crop will be compensated by other crops (food security-7). Grow few medicinal plants in part of the land (health security-8). In order to do all these activities, the entire farm families need to engage themselves in the farm activities throughout the year (employment security-9). Cultivation in part of the land for family consumption (food security) and regular income. Further, agriculture without women is a day dream and almost all the productive units proposed in this model are labor intensive demanding women participation and return goes directly to the women (gender balance). If all these are met, the farming family will gain a social status in the society (social security-10). This is how 10 securities are ensured to a family targeted under the program and rescued them from conversion and other economical crisis.
Kindly support our intervention to help these deserving families. Janakalyan is registered under FCRA (Foreign Contribution Regulation Act) 2010 to receive Foreign Contribution.
