IRRI has partnered with Give2Asia, which ensures safe, effective and impactful international philanthropy, in order to engage more donors who share IRRI's cause. The secured donations via Give2Asia support IRRI's work with hundreds of research and development partners across Asia.
For every $20 invested in the global rice science research, one person is lifted out of poverty.
Can Asia feed itself? With less land, less water, less labor, plus the threat of climate change, Asia urgently needs new solutions to overcome this growing list of challenges. The good news is—we have done it before, and we believe we can do it again. Through IRRI’s rice breeding work, US$1.65B worth of extra rice is harvested every year.
In 1980-2009, 226 varieties were released in Vietnam, 194 in Indonesia, and 148 in the Philippines. Out of these, 77, 89, and 70 varieties were the result of the work of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). In 1985-2009, improved rice varieties increased yield by 11.6% in Vietnam, 13% in Indonesia, and 6.7% in the Philippines. This also meant an increase in farmers’ profits per hectare by $153 in Vietnam, $76 in Indonesia, and $152 in the Philippines. This could be attributed to more scientists being trained on various aspects of rice research from 1965-2008—705 from Vietnam, 987 from Indonesia, and 1,959 from the Philippines.
IRRI was created in the 1960s by the Ford and Rockefeller foundations, working with the Philippine government. It has its headquarters in Laguna, Philippines, next to the University of the Philippines Los Baños. It has fundraising offices in Singapore and Hong Kong.
IRRI’s first breakthrough—high-yielding ‘semi-dwarf’ rice varieties (so called because of their miniature stature, which made the plants more sturdy)—is credited for saving millions in Asia from famine and provided a foundation for the region’s subsequent economic growth, lifting more people out of poverty than at any other time in recorded history.
