Culture is life.
Since the mid-1990s, the Tao Foundation for Culture and Arts—a Philippine non-profit, non-stock corporation—has been doing its share in supporting Philippine cultural revitalization initiatives in the Philippines. These initiatives have been crucial to the Filipinos’ and Filipino descendants’ healing of the centuries of colonization, dispossession, and displacement, and crucial to their continuing unfoldment as peoples with a sense of history, identity, and power.
Partnerships between Philippine indigenous communities and the public and private sectors have been an important strategy in encouraging local communities to reclaim, assert, honor and further develop their own cultural knowledges and practices.
In pursuit of its mission of facilitating the transmission of cultural traditions, and of contributing to the empowerment of Cultural Masters, the Tao Foundation has maintained two programs: the Agusan del Sur-School of Living Traditions or ASLT that support the Cultural Masters and youth of Agusan del Sur, Northeastern Mindanao, and the PAMATI Gathering of Elders and Younger Generations that puts in conversation Cultural Masters and professionals from different parts of the Philippines and the world. Non-formal courses in indigenous languages, musics, dances, arts, gender, health, environment, spirituality and peace-building are at the heart of both the ASLT and PAMATI.
While both the ASLT and PAMATI have garnered institutional support from the National Commission for Culture and Arts and from other government agencies, this support has been partial, requiring significant counterpart assistance from friends all over. This counterpart support is needed not only to fully cover the costs of training materials, food, transportation and honoraria of the Cultural Masters, students, and the Coordinating Team, and the improvement of school facilities, it is needed most especially to maintain Tao Foundation’s fiscal upkeep that will, in turn, allow it to continue its valuable service.
We call on all Friends from local, national, regional and global spheres to support the Tao Foundation on a regular basis. We invite you to be our partner in building strong cultural communities of mutual support; communities committed to the greater good. Maraming salamat po at Mabuhay!
